Our Story · 2011 – today
It started in 2011 with one advert in a magazine, a box of leaflets and a garage in Kelty. Since then we’ve had a showroom in Kirkcaldy and adverts on STV across Scotland, and today we have offices in Dunfermline and our warehouse in Rosyth. We’re still a family business, built by local people from the towns and villages we all grew up in.

Year by year
2011
Dean McKenzie spotted an advert in an English home magazine for an internal conservatory roof insulation system that nobody in Scotland was offering, and brought it north.
He built the website himself and went door to door with leaflets. The first enquiry came from Kirkcaldy in November 2011. Dean sold it the next day, a joiner friend fitted it, and The Conservatory Converters was up and running.
2012
In June 2012 we became The Conservatory Converters Ltd and moved into our first premises in Kirkcaldy. That autumn our adverts started appearing in the Sunday Post, the Sunday Mail and the Daily Record, and the phones didn’t stop. To keep up, we started quoting online.

2013
We opened our first showroom at Dunnikier Business Park in Kirkcaldy, with a full-size before-and-after conservatory so customers could feel the difference for themselves.
That summer we started fitting full tiled roofs, launched them at the Ingliston Garden Show in Edinburgh, and became a Metrotile approved partner, which we still are today.

2014
Customers kept asking: “Could you do the same with my garage?” So we launched The Garage Converters, turning cold, cluttered garages into bedrooms, offices, gyms and playrooms, built by the same local team.
2014 – 2023 Kelty Hearts
2014 – 2023
Kelty Hearts has always been close to our hearts. Dean was a director and investor in the club for nearly a decade, and we helped transform New Central Park, starting with a new 250-capacity seated stand with wheelchair access in 2018.
In 2020 we added new terracing behind both goals, and supplied and installed building extensions, a kiosk, turnstiles and containers. In those nine years the club won six league titles and four promotions, including promotion to the SPFL in 2021 and to League One in 2022.
2015
We outgrew Kirkcaldy and moved to Primrose Lane in Rosyth. Our first STV advert went out, and we opened show sites at Dobbies in Braehead and Livingston so people across the central belt could see a conversion for themselves.
We also launched Garden 2 Room, building garden rooms with the same local team.
The same year Stephen Husband, a Kelty boy just back from professional football and now our MD, joined us as our first adult apprentice. Logan Kay also joined us in 2015, becoming our first school leaver apprentice.
2016
We invested in a new showroom and warehouse in Rosyth, put 20 brand-new vans on the road, launched our new 3-layer insulation system and exhibited at the Ideal Home Show in Glasgow. With our STV adverts a huge success, six or seven install squads were out every day, fitting 25 conservatory roofs a week.
2017 – 2019
We were back at the Ideal Home Show, and at the end of 2017 our new adverts went out on Sky TV. That year, as media habits changed, we stopped advertising in newspapers and moved our marketing online. Our STV adverts ran until early 2019.
2021
Stephen played professionally for clubs including Dunfermline Athletic and Blackpool before coming home to Kelty in 2015. He started with us as an adult apprentice, learned the trade on the tools, worked his way up, and in 2021 became our Managing Director.
2024
Our joiners already knew how to transform a room, so in 2024 we launched Media Walls Scotland: bespoke feature walls with built-in TVs, fires, lighting and storage. It’s become one of our busiest divisions, with almost £1m in sales in its first year.
2025
Our workshop and warehouse are still on Primrose Lane in Rosyth, where we’ve been since 2015. In 2025 we opened new offices at Fife Interchange North in Dunfermline, home to the sales, marketing, finance and office teams behind the newly formed Converters Home Improvement Group.
Community
Supporting the communities we come from has always mattered to us. As well as backing Kelty Hearts FC, we helped launch the Kelty Hearts Community Club, which we continue to sponsor, and put £500k+ towards the facility build at New Central Park.
We’ve also sponsored Raith Rovers, Dundonald Bluebell, Cowdenbeath FC, The Blue Brazil and the Swifts, and we regularly support local community causes wherever we can.

Our people
This has been a family business from the start, and the team that has grown around it feels like family too. Many of the people who were with us in the Kirkcaldy days are still here today.
D
Founder. Still at the heart of it, 15 years on.
A
Dean’s partner. Has run the office and the accounts since 2013.
T
Dean’s son. A joiner on our installation teams.
J
Dean’s daughter. One of the first voices you’ll hear on our telesales team.
S
Started as an apprentice in 2015, Managing Director since 2021.
13
Our longest-serving team members, with us since 2013 and still here.
Today
Our family of brands now covers conservatory roof conversions, garage conversions, garden rooms, media walls, windows and doors, and blinds and shutters. More than 50 people work for us, most of them local to Fife, and some have been with us for over a decade.
The values are the same as in that garage in 2011: do the job right, treat every home like our own, and look after our customers and our loyal local staff.
The next chapter
Turn the space you’re not using into a room you love.
